Pay Taxes Using Credit Card

I never in my right mind would have ever considered paying one penny more in taxes then I have too, well that is until this latest FIscovery over at Go Curry Cracker!. Well technically it’s not paying more in taxes per se, but paying a nominal service fee to a payment provider so that I can pay my taxes using a credit card. WHAT!?, exactly my response when I first read it. Oh and when it comes to taxes, that can include state, federal, and even property tax, assuming your state and local municipality offers the option to pay via credit card.

Now the brilliance here is that I never looked at taking a hit on the service fee as a way to get an extremely discounted rate for lodging and travel. To get the reward points that come with signing up for new credit cards there’s usually a catch, you need to spend a few thousand dollars over a few month period. So how easy is it then to meet this requirement by simply making your tax payment using the new credit card. Sure it will cost the extra service fee, but in return you get the reward points which can then be used for lodging and travel. Over time and at the right time of year, these points can cover the majority, if not all, of the cost.  All you end up paying is the service fee. We all have to pay taxes, why not get a little something in return. 🙂

My FIscovery Tip

Most folks bundle their property tax with their mortgage payment, simply get that removed and pay separately (via credit card), depending where you live (high tax state/county), you now have four opportunities to take advantage of reward card offers. 🙂
